How long does epoxy flooring take to cure?
Touch dry in hours, back in use in days, fully cured in a week. Paul explains the real epoxy cure timeline and what slows it down.

Epoxy flooring is touch dry in about 6 to 12 hours, ready for careful foot traffic after roughly 24 hours, and back in normal use within 2 to 3 days. Full chemical cure, where the floor reaches its proper hardness and chemical resistance, takes around 7 days at a steady 20°C.
Right, that is the short answer out of the way. Now let me tell you what actually happens on site, because the numbers on a data sheet and the numbers in a cold January warehouse are two very different animals.
Drying and curing are not the same thing
People use the words like they mean the same thing. They do not, and mixing them up is how floors get ruined.
Drying is the surface going firm to the touch. Curing is the chemical reaction between the resin and the hardener finishing its job all the way through the film. A floor can feel bone dry underfoot and still be days away from being properly cured underneath. Walk kit onto it too early and you will press the story of your bad decision straight into the finish.
The epoxy cure timeline, stage by stage
Here is the running order I give every client before we start, so nobody is stood at the door at 6pm wondering if they can wheel the pallet truck back in.

Touch dry lands somewhere between 6 and 12 hours. The surface firms up but it still bruises if you look at it funny, so keep everybody off it. After about 24 hours you can put soft-soled shoes on it, walk it gently, no dragging and no dropping tools. By day two or three it will take normal footfall and light loads without complaint. Full cure, the point where the resin has done everything it is ever going to do, is around the 7 day mark.
What slows a cure right down
Temperature is the big one. Epoxy wants a steady 20°C or thereabouts. Manufacturers' technical data sheets, the ones from the likes of Sika and Flowcrete, all say much the same thing: drop below roughly 10 to 15°C and the reaction crawls, and below about 10°C it can stall altogether and never harden properly. I have seen a floor sit tacky for a week in an unheated unit in February because nobody thought the cold mattered. It matters.
Humidity is the quiet troublemaker. Anything above about 85 percent relative humidity interferes with the chemistry and can leave you with a cloudy, blushed finish. And moisture coming up through the slab is worse still, which is a whole subject in itself and the number one reason floors let go later.
How we speed it up without wrecking the floor
You cannot rush chemistry, but you can give it a fair chance. On a cold job we will bring in indirect heaters to hold the room and the slab at temperature, and we watch the dew point rather than guessing. Where a client genuinely cannot afford the downtime, we will spec a fast-cure PMMA system instead of standard epoxy, because that can be back in service in a couple of hours rather than a couple of days. It costs more, but a food factory losing a day of production usually thinks it is cheap.
From the tools: The most expensive mistake I ever watched happen was a client sending a forklift across a two-day-old epoxy floor because it "felt hard". It was hard on top and still green underneath. The tyres left tracked ruts the whole length of the aisle and the section had to be ground back and recoated. That one afternoon of impatience cost them a full weekend of closure and a bill they did not enjoy. Wait for the seven days. Every time.
When can forklifts, racking and vehicles go back on?
Point loads and tyres are the real test, and they go back on last. Racking legs, forklift wheels and car tyres all concentrate weight or heat into a small patch, and a floor that is fine for boots can still dent or lift under that. Give it the full 7 days before anything heavy or wheeled goes near it. If someone is pushing you to reopen sooner, that is exactly the moment to spec fast-cure and stop pretending standard epoxy will do something it will not.
The short version
Feet in a day, life back to normal in two or three, everything heavy after a week. Keep it warm, keep it dry, and do not trust "it feels ready". If your timeline is tighter than that, the answer is a different system, not a shorter wait.
